Why do I need to carry it out?

This is an inspection on the condition of an existing electrical installation, to identify any deficiencies against the current electrical safety standard for installations

We will check the electrical installation against BSI7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations ( IEE Wiring Regulations)-as amended. This is the national safety standard and contains around 850 Regulations

The law requires that you keep your entire electrical system safe at all times. The only effective means to that end is to have periodic testing and inspection carried out together any needed action to remedy faults found during testing

If regular inspection and testing is neglected you may be endangering your work force and if the worst happens you may invalidate any insurance claim

Is it a requirement of my insurance company?

Increasingly, insurers are insisting that inspection and testing be carried out on a regular basis. If you suffer an avoidable accident, then under law, if found guilty, you will be deemed to have committed a criminal offence. Insurers will not pay fines or compensation suffered resulting from a criminal offence.

An EICR inspection will

  • Reveal if any of your electrical circuits or equipment is overloaded
  • Find any potential electrical shock risks and fire hazards in your electrical installation
  • Identify any defective electrical work
  • Highlight any lack of earth or bonding

A schedule of circuits will also be provided

During Testing the engineer will make observations and will give each a code

C1 C2 or C3

The observations can describe a defect or need for improvement within the electrical installation

C1 = Danger Present

C2 = Potential Danger

C3 = Improvement Recommended

The main purpose of an EICR is to report on the safety condition of an existing installation. It will describe the overall condition as either ‘satisfactory’ or ‘unsatisfactory’ which means remedial work is required to make the installation safe for continued use

It will also include a summary of the inspection in the report which will give a clear indication of the condition of the electrical installation
