PAT Testing for Construction Sites

Portable tools and leads on a construction site face movement, dust, moisture and damage that a desk appliance rarely does. City PAT helps contractors plan inspection and testing around the real conditions in which equipment is used.

Identify whose equipment is in scope

List tools, chargers, transformers, extension leads and portable site equipment by owner or team. Confirm whether the brief covers one contractor’s kit, shared equipment or several subcontractors. Agree where equipment can be gathered safely for inspection and who can take faulty items out of service. Site conditions change as a project moves from groundwork to fit-out. A useful maintenance programme includes user checks and a route for reporting damage between formal inspections. HSE guidance makes clear that a tool used on a construction site may need more frequent attention than a lamp in a hotel bedroom; there is no sensible single interval for every item.

Fit the visit to the programme

Tell us about inductions, access requirements, the work phase and any equipment that leaves site each evening. Keep clear records of the items inspected and defects found, then arrange prompt repair or replacement so unsafe kit does not return to use. PAT concerns portable equipment and is separate from inspection of temporary electrical installations.

Does a PAT label make a tool safe until its next test?

No. Users should report damage whenever it occurs; a previous test does not remove the need for ongoing checks
