PAT Testing for Retail Businesses
In retail, electrical equipment sits in places customers see and in areas they do not: tills, displays, back-office desks, stockrooms and staff kitchens. City PAT helps shop owners and facilities teams organise portable appliance checks without losing sight of trading hours and public access.

Look beyond the sales floor
Start with a list of sites and the equipment that belongs to each one. Include seasonal displays, portable signage, extension leads and equipment that is repeatedly plugged in or moved. An item in a dry office may face different wear from one on a busy shop floor or in a stockroom. For a single shop, agree a visit around quiet trading periods and restricted areas. For a chain, tell us how stores are grouped, who manages access and whether there is one central contact for records and defects. We can discuss the practical scope and scheduling before quoting.
Make findings actionable
Visual condition and use should inform the inspection and testing plan. Pass any defect to the person responsible for the store and remove unsafe equipment from use. Store records by branch, especially when equipment is moved between sites. If the wider brief includes fixed wiring, fire alarms, emergency lighting or extinguishers, ask about these as separate services.
Should display equipment be included?
Include it in the initial inventory and explain how it is powered and moved; the appropriate check depends on its use and condition.
